I offer private instruction
in
saxophone, clarinet, flute, and theory at all ages and levels.
Under some circumstances, I have also taken on piano students,
depending on their particular goals and interests. In addition to
extensive experience as an independent teacher, I have had appointments
on the private music faculty at the Solomon Schechter Day School
(Newton, MA), the John
Payne Music Center (Brookline, MA), and hold a current appointment
at the Riverdale Country School
(Bronx, NY). I am generally willing to give lessons in your space
or mine, depending on what is most convenient for you.The music teachers who have had the greatest impact on me were all people who understood that the study of music cannot be set apart from the much broader project of becoming a better, happier, and deeper human being. They also understood the implications of this: that what counts as a good course of study, and what counts as a good end-result varies widely from student to student. And so, in my own lessons, I strongly emphasize the cultivation of a distinctive creative voice and a meaningful, personal relationship to the music. Both of these aims, of course, require a careful balance among the nuts and bolts of technique, measured doses of theory, and the freedom to experiment and improvise, all of which are vital aspects of my approach.
